“Spam King” Robert Alan Soloway arrested

Spam victims went to bed with a broad smile on their face Wednesday night as they learned that “Spam King” Robert Alan Soloway was arrested in Seattle.

Spam in an unusual topic for a gambling information web site like our; however we can’t refrain to rejoice being ourselves victims of the electronic plague of the internet era.

Every web site with interactive services has to publish its contact information on web pages. This information is picked up by software programs and ends up in alleged “opt-in” lists scumbags like Soloway use.

Our spam filters manage an average of 1,000 spam emails per email address every day. With over 10 active email addresses one can understand our joy in learning of the arrest of Robert Alan Soloway.

Robert Alan Soloway and his company, Newport Internet Marketing, have been charged with mail fraud, identity theft, fraud and money laundering.

Soloway advertised a mass e-mail service that sent messages to an opt-in list of addresses, but didn’t actually use such a permission-based list, the indictment says. He also sold software products that customers could use themselves to send out mass e-mails.

According to the indictment Soloway used programs and many different proxy computers in an effort to hide the source of the messages.

The 27-year-old “Spam King” faces fines of over US$700,000. We believe a fair additional punishment would be to have his email addys spammed for life.

Google is rolling out a technology designed to overcome the major drawback faced by all web-based applications: the fact that they don’t work without an internet connection.

Google Gears is an open source technology for creating offline web applications that is being launched today at Google’s annual Developer Day gatherings around the world.

“With Google Gears, we’re tackling the key limitation of the browser in order to make it a stronger platform for deploying all types of applications and enabling a better user experience,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in a statement.

The Google Gears technology is designed to be used for web applications such as email and word or image processing.

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates: Historic discussion live from D 2007

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/tech_news/Engadget_Live_Coverage_of_Gates_vs_Jobs’;

We kind of never thought we’d see the day where Mac and PC voluntarily shared the stage on neutral ground, but that day is today. Very soon Bill Gates and Steve Jobs — both pioneering execs that need absolutely no introduction — will sit up in front of the audience here at D and discuss god knows what. Don’t miss this, people, who knows if this will happen again in any of our lifetimes. You’ll know when we get started. Who’s got odds that they don’t walk out and say “Hi, I’m a PC.” “Hi, I’m a Mac.”?

We’re in! They’re playing the Beatles, just like they did when Jobs came out the first time.

Update: Video recap online! Right after the break, but before the rest of our coverage.

Melbourne start-up that claims to be developing a search engine that improves on the world leader.
MyLiveSearch, which plans to go live as a public beta in a few weeks, is the brainchild of self-taught software developer Rob Gabriel.Mr Gabriel, 35, says his search engine gives better, more relevant results than the search king because it is a truly “live” search.Google’s search engine works by building a vast index of web pages, via automated “spiders” that crawl through billions of web pages a year. Facebook versus MySpace

MySpace v. Facebook: “It’s Not A Decision. It’s an IQ Test”

Michael Arrington

Venture capitalist Josh Kopelman rips into MySpace today as he applauds Facebook’s new developer platform.

Facebook’s timing is perfect. They just released an API that gives third party developers deep access to Facebook functionality and it’s 20 million users. Not only can these third party startups get a widget placed on people’s Facebook profiles, but they can also get viral distribution through users’ news feeds and access core Facebook features. Using the tools that Facebook made available, developers  .

Do SaaS ventures need VCs?

Posted by Phil Wainewright @ 8:47 am Categories: Business models, Venture capital Tags: Software-as-a-service, Financing, Phil Wainewright

I had some interesting responses to my posting last week about Financing SaaS ventures. One of the most interesting got me thinking whether the best SaaS ventures actually need venture capital. Obviously someone needs to put up enough money to cover the founders’ living costs while they develop the application, although entrepreneurs often do that simply by leading a hand

Siebel 2.0: The end of Salesforce.com

Posted by Joshua Greenbaum @ 10:43

It’s finally time to call a spade a spade, or in this case, a soon-to-be has-been a has-been. Of course, doing so after the fact sounds too spiteful, so I’m going to do it well ahead of the curve. While these kind of predictions are hard to get right, I think I’m calling this one correctly, based in part on a similar call I made five years ago.

My prognostication is about Salesforce.com, and here goes: Salesforce.com is the next Siebel, the next CRM has-been, the next low-priced software buyout opportunity, unless somehow the …

SAP: Keine Web 2.0-Funktionen in diesem Jahr

Der Walldorfer Softwareexperte will den Mittelstand für sich gewinnen. Dazu soll unter anderem das Frontend mit Web 2.0-Funktionen angereichert werden. Doch in diesem Jahr wird dies nicht mehr geschehen.

from: http://www.zdnet.de/itmanager/strategie/0,39023331,39152276,00.htm
