GlobalSpec: Social Media Trends in the Industrial Sector

Hugo E. Martin currently worte in his blog an interesting article about the Social Media trens in the Industrial Sector.

GlobalSpec recently conducted its 2nd annual social media usage survey of engineering, technical, manufacturing and industrial professionals. Not too much has changed in a big way. Hindering a faster implementation is the fact that many companies do not allow staff to access social media sites and social networks during working hours or place restriction on it (35 %), e.g. 70 % don’t allow Facebook, 66 % don’t allow Twitter or YouTube usage.

On the other side, 59% of the industrial professionals surveyed are on Facebook (2009: 42%, 37 % on LinkedIn (2009: 32%), 15 % on Twitter (2009:12 %) … maybe time to rethink. Buyers in the B2B sector are human beings, too …

Im Blog der T3N schreibt Falk Hedemann einen sehr interessanten Beitrag über die Social Media Strategien der “Großen”. Dabei analysiert er den „The Global Social Media Check-up 2011“ on der PR-Agentur Burston-Marsteller.


Social Media ist in den Unternehmen angekommen und wird nicht mehr nur als Trend wahrgenommen, sondern ernsthaft in die Kommunikation nach außen einbezogen. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt die aktuelle Ausgabe der Studie „The Global Social Media Check-up 2011“, die von der PR-Agentur Burston-Marsteller nach 2010 nun zum zweiten Mal angefertigt wurde. Demnach verwenden jetzt bereits 84 Prozent der Fortune 100-Unternehmen mindestens eine Social Media Plattform.

Nachdem man sich die Daten der Studie „The Global Social Media Check-up 2011“ von Burson-Marsteller angesehen hat, stellt sich nicht mehr die Frage, ob Social Media in Unternehmen eingesetzt werden sollte, sondern nur noch wie und wo Aktivitäten stattfinden sollen. Global agierende Unternehmen, die auch 2011 noch Berührungsängste mit Facebook, Twitter, YouTube und Blogs haben, werden sehr wahrscheinlich ihre Wettbewerbsfähigkeit verlieren und hinter den Unternehmen zurückbleiben, die bereits eine funktionierende Social Media Strategie entwickelt haben.

Results of our Second Bi-Monthly Social Media Survey

WEDBUSH, Inc., a a leading financial services and investment firm surveyed 2,500 U.S. consumers 18 years and older about their use of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and
YouTube. Here a the results:

  • Facebook continues to grow its membership (22% CAGR), passing 600mm members.
  • Engagement measures are growing rapidly, with members averaging 7.5 hours per week on the site, up 15% in two months. Over 57% of members now log in daily.
  • Privacy is decreasing as a concern for Facebook members, driven by lower media noise and enhanced privacy tools, which have been used by 65% of members.
  • 37% of members play games on Facebook, up 20% since the last survey, with players 55+ spending more time playing (9.7 hours per week!) than younger members.v
  • More than 50% of members have “Liked” a Brand, with the five largest brand fan bases growing by more than 66% on average in just the last three months.
  • Goldman Sachs to the World — Facebook really is worth more than $50 Billion!
  • VC funding of Social Media companies soars to $819mm in Q4, almost equaling amount raised in first nine months of 2010. Total funding for the year reaches $1.67B.
  • Of the total Social Media VC funding in 2010, over 30%+ ($512mm) was for companies whose primary business is leveraging the Facebook platform.
