“Spam King” Robert Alan Soloway arrested

Spam victims went to bed with a broad smile on their face Wednesday night as they learned that “Spam King” Robert Alan Soloway was arrested in Seattle.

Spam in an unusual topic for a gambling information web site like our; however we can’t refrain to rejoice being ourselves victims of the electronic plague of the internet era.

Every web site with interactive services has to publish its contact information on web pages. This information is picked up by software programs and ends up in alleged “opt-in” lists scumbags like Soloway use.

Our spam filters manage an average of 1,000 spam emails per email address every day. With over 10 active email addresses one can understand our joy in learning of the arrest of Robert Alan Soloway.

Robert Alan Soloway and his company, Newport Internet Marketing, have been charged with mail fraud, identity theft, fraud and money laundering.

Soloway advertised a mass e-mail service that sent messages to an opt-in list of addresses, but didn’t actually use such a permission-based list, the indictment says. He also sold software products that customers could use themselves to send out mass e-mails.

According to the indictment Soloway used programs and many different proxy computers in an effort to hide the source of the messages.

The 27-year-old “Spam King” faces fines of over US$700,000. We believe a fair additional punishment would be to have his email addys spammed for life.

Google is rolling out a technology designed to overcome the major drawback faced by all web-based applications: the fact that they don’t work without an internet connection.

Google Gears is an open source technology for creating offline web applications that is being launched today at Google’s annual Developer Day gatherings around the world.

“With Google Gears, we’re tackling the key limitation of the browser in order to make it a stronger platform for deploying all types of applications and enabling a better user experience,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in a statement.

The Google Gears technology is designed to be used for web applications such as email and word or image processing.

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates: Historic discussion live from D 2007

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/tech_news/Engadget_Live_Coverage_of_Gates_vs_Jobs’;

We kind of never thought we’d see the day where Mac and PC voluntarily shared the stage on neutral ground, but that day is today. Very soon Bill Gates and Steve Jobs — both pioneering execs that need absolutely no introduction — will sit up in front of the audience here at D and discuss god knows what. Don’t miss this, people, who knows if this will happen again in any of our lifetimes. You’ll know when we get started. Who’s got odds that they don’t walk out and say “Hi, I’m a PC.” “Hi, I’m a Mac.”?

We’re in! They’re playing the Beatles, just like they did when Jobs came out the first time.

Update: Video recap online! Right after the break, but before the rest of our coverage.
